This is my tenth long-form Grey Lady video and audio podcast. Ten may not sound like an enormous number, but to me it means I kept a promise to myself.

For years, I encouraged everyone around me to use their voice, pursue their ideas, learn the technology, and build something of their own. Eventually, I had to ask myself why I kept giving everybody else permission to begin while continuing to wait for permission myself.

This is not really a conversation about becoming an influencer. It is about visibility, permission, and self-investment. It is about what happens when a woman who has spent much of her life pouring into everyone else finally decides to pour into herself—and allows people to see her doing it.

I talk about learning to manage my light, the point where generosity can become self-erasure, and what it means to put myself on the list without pushing anyone else off it. I also share the questions that come with starting publicly as a Black woman in my fifties: Did I wait too long?

Is there room for another voice? Will anyone care what I have to say?
Grey Lady has taught me that beginning later does not mean beginning with nothing. I am bringing decades of experience, mistakes, resilience, curiosity, and a clearer understanding of who I am. Maybe I did not start early—but I am not starting empty.

What if the help you asked for has already arrived—but it came through the wrong person, in the wrong package, or as a much smaller first step than the rescue you imagined? In this Grey Lady conversation, I revisit the familiar story of a man stranded during a flood who refuses a canoe, a motorboat, a yacht, and even a helicopter because he is waiting for God to rescue him directly. The story raises a larger question: Why are we so quick to dismiss help when it does not look the way we expected? We’ll explore how we attach a picture—and sometimes a full set of instructions—to our prayers, hopes, plans, and requests. We’ll also consider the important difference between recognizing help and being willing to accept it. Sometimes pride, fear, control, vulnerability, or distrust of the messenger keeps us from getting into the boat. But discernment matters too. Some boats have holes. Some rescuers expect ownership of us afterward. Not every offer is right simply because it arrives while we are struggling.Help can arrive quietly, ordinarily, inconveniently, or through someone we would not have chosen. So, is help really unavailable—or have we dismissed every boat because none of them looked like the rescue we imagined?Have you ever overlooked help that was already in front of you—or wisely refused an offer that came with the wrong price? Have you ever shared a dream too early—and almost immediately wished you hadn’t?In this episode of Grey Lady, I reflect on the old warning about casting your pearls before swine—not because everyone who questions us is a pig, and definitely not because this is a Bible study. This is a conversation about timing, access, and what can happen when we expose something fragile to other people’s opinions before it has had time to become strong.I also share part of my own journey starting Grey Lady in my mid-50s: why I kept parts of it close, how someone else’s doubt can eventually begin to sound like our own voice, and why the right people—and the right feedback—still matter.Protecting a dream is not the same as hiding it forever. Some things need time to develop before they are ready for an audience. But eventually, the pearl has to leave the oyster. So, who has earned access to your dream while it is still becoming? And how do you know when it is ready to be shared?Share your thoughts in the comments, and subscribe for more Grey Lady conversations about life, human behavior, meaning, and the questions worth sitting with.Stay curious. There are cars driving around with no steering wheel and no pedals. And people are getting in them. On purpose. 😂Watching Tesla’s Cybercab left me fascinated, excited—and maybe a little terrified. But it also got me thinking: "How many other steering wheels have we already handed over without noticing?"As a Gen Xer, I’ve lived from card catalogs and cassette tapes to smartphones, AI and autonomous vehicles. I love the many conveniences technology has given us. But at what point do we stop outsourcing only our tasks and begin outsourcing our attention, judgment, curiosity, critical thinking—or even our choices? And maybe autopilot isn’t just about technology. Sometimes entire lives can run that way.Maybe we don’t need our hands on the wheel every second. But every once in a while, it might be worth checking the route and asking:Who’s driving? And perhaps the more important question: Did I choose where we’re going?Stay curious. Keep questioning.#GreyLady #autopilot #cybercab #technology #lifelessons

What if the life you’re waiting for finally arrives… only for you to start waiting for the next thing?
When I retire. When I have more money. When I lose the weight. When I have more time. When things finally settle down.
We all have our “whens.” And sometimes waiting is necessary. Planning, hoping, dreaming, and looking forward to what comes next are part of being human.
But what happens when “when” becomes the price of admission for living?
In this episode of Grey Lady, I think through the strange relationship between our present lives and the future versions of ourselves we imagine—including my own Future Stephanie, who apparently wakes up every morning spiritually rested and moisturized. 😂
Maybe the goal isn’t to stop having “whens.” Maybe the better question is:
How much of our lives are we willing to put on hold until “when” gets here?

The Salad Years

What if these are the good old days—and we just don't know it yet?
Of all things, Grand Theft Auto VI got me thinking about that question.
While watching the GTA VI Extended Look on Netflix, a quiet moment near the end caught me completely off guard: beautiful imagery, music, and a voice talking about the “glory days” and something called “the salad years.”
It stayed with me.
In this Grey Lady conversation, I explore the surprisingly old origins of that phrase, nostalgia, missed opportunities, and what happens when we spend so much time remembering the past and planning for the future that we risk missing the life happening right now.
Maybe life really is a meal—and we're so busy waiting for the next course that we forget to taste the one already in front of us.
So perhaps the question isn't, When were your salad years?
Are you living in some of them right now?
I'd love to hear what this brings up for you.
Stay curious. Keep questioning.
